SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) – Republican state Sen. Joe Leibham says he’s joining the race to replace longtime 6th District Congressman Tom Petri, who announced earlier this month that he will not seek re-election.
Leibham says he wants to be a reformer in Congress and help reduce taxes, which he says are too burdensome. He announced his candidacy Tuesday at his parents’ home in Sheboygan.
Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris became the first Democrat to declare his candidacy earlier Tuesday.
Leibham will face primary opponents state Sen. Glenn Grothman and state Rep. Duey Stroebel in the Republican-leaning district that spans eastern and central Wisconsin.
