MILWAUKEE (AP) – Scores of Wisconsin law enforcement agencies will accept prescription medications this weekend as part of a national effort to safely dispose of expired and leftover drugs.
The annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day happens Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous.
Residents can find their nearest collection site by checking the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s website.
The government has gotten involved in collection in part to keep water supplies safe. When people flush leftover medications down the toilet or pour them down the sink, the drugs can contaminate the water supply.
Also, some people let extra drugs sit in medicine cabinets, where they can be stolen, abused or accidentally ingested.
In October, Americans turned in 324 tons of prescription drugs.
