WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate Intelligence Committee has found a pattern of CIA deception about the effectiveness of harsh interrogations after the Sept. 11 attacks.
The McClatchy news service has published what it says are the 20 findings from a voluminous, still-classified review.
It concludes waterboarding and other enhanced interrogation techniques failed to produce valuable intelligence; the CIA misled the Bush administration, Congress and the public about the value of the brutal treatment; the agency employed unauthorized techniques on detainees and improperly detained others; and never properly evaluated its actions.
The reported findings are consistent with what senators have detailed about the investigation since its 2009 inception.
The committee is investigating what it says is the findings’ unauthorized disclosure.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein says she plans to refer the matter to the Justice Department.
