MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Wisconsin state Sen. Pam Galloway says she’s resigning to deal with health issues in her family.

The Wausau Republican said in a statement Friday she’s decided to put the needs of her family first. She says her family has experienced “multiple, sudden and serious health issues.”

Galloway is one of four GOP state senators set to face recall elections this summer. A spokesman for Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says Galloway’s resignation has nothing to do with the recall election.

Her resignation will leave the state Senate with an even 16-16 split between Republicans and Democrats. However, the Senate wrapped up its legislative session Thursday and isn’t scheduled to be in session again this year. The recall elections were prompted by the lawmakers’ support forrestricting certain collective-bargaining rights.
