MILWAUKEE (AP) – Bo Ryan has been in Wisconsin for so long that it is hard to imagine the coach being anywhere but the Midwest.

He’s rooted in the East, though. Ryan grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Chester.

His ties home have been especially prominent with Wisconsin advancing to the Final Four and a game Saturday against Kentucky in Texas. It’s the first time the Badgers have advanced to the national semifinals in Ryan’s 13 seasons in Madison. It also comes after his father, Butch, passed away last summer. He was a longtime youth coach in the Chester area.

Ryan has talked about the mental toughness he acquired growing up. Friends of Ryan say the trait that has carried over to how he coaches and, by extension, the Badgers.
