LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) – The city of La Crosse is closing hiking and biking trails in Hixon Forest to prevent damage during the spring thaw.
La Crosse Tribune reports city workers have barricaded the road to the lower Hixon Forest to keep hikers out.
Mike Charron is a certified trail builder with the Outdoor Recreation Alliance. He says the soil gets loose as the ground thaws, and it’s easy to gouge trails with boots and bike tires.
The length of the closure depends on the weather. In some years, forest trails open in March. In other years, it’s mid-May.
