WASHINGTON (AP) – A new survey finds that more than half the nation’s public schools need to be repaired, renovated or modernized.

The National Center for Education Statistics says it would cost about $197 billion to get the schools in good condition. That would total about $4.5 million per school on average.

Many school districts have had to delay maintenance and construction projects because of slashed budgets during tough economic times.

The survey found that on average main school buildings were 44 years old. The data is from the 2012-2013 school year.
