CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – After last month’s chemical spill, many West Virginians still prefer filling jugs of water from a tanker truck over trusting the tap in their kitchen.

Weeks ago, government officials said the running water across nine counties was suitable for all needs. But mixed messages from officials have kept the public skeptical.

The chemical licorice smell still wafts out of some showers, toilets and taps in homes and businesses. The odor caused cancellations at five schools.

Government messaging about whether pregnant women should drink the water has been particularly muddied.

And no top officials involved will call the water “safe.”
