Members of Dairylea Cooperative have approved a proposed merger with Dairy Farmers of America (DFA). The merger will become official on April 1st, Dairylea’s nearly 300 employees will become DFA employees and continue to operate out of the cooperative’s offices in Syracuse, New York.
Based in Syracuse, Dairylea started as Dairymen’s League in 1907. They started using the Dairylea name on their products in 1923 and officially changed the name of the cooperative in 1969. The co-op currently markets around 5.5 billion pounds of milk from more than 1,200 member-farmers in the Northeast.
The two co-ops have been working together in various areas for years including a joint marketing effort called Dairy Marketing Services. Created in 1999; DMS markets 16 billion pounds of milk annually from more than 9,500 dairy farms.
