MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The Department of Natural Resources says bridge replacement work in southwestern Wisconsin could kill some rare frogs.

Grant County officials are looking to replace a bridge over the Platte River in the town of Ellenboro. The area, however, is home to the endangered northern cricket frog. The county has asked the DNR for an incidental take authorization.

DNR officials say they plan to grant the authorization pending public comment. They have concluded the project could indeed result in the incidental taking of some frogs but likely won’t jeopardize the frog’s continued existence or recovery in the state and the new bridge would benefit the public.

The DNR is taking comments on the authorization through Feb. 11.
