Water ban lifted for part of W.Va. after spill

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – One West Virginia woman says even though the ban on using tap water is being lifted, she’s still not going to drink any of it until she’s sure that it’s free of the chemical that spilled into a river last week. Angela Stone says she’ll shower in it and do dishes with it, but that’s it, for now.

Officials today started lifting the ban, after determining that the water is safe to drink. But they’re doing it slowly, one area at a time, to make sure the system isn’t overwhelmed. And it could be days before everyone is given the go-ahead.

The announcement comes five days after some 300,000 people were told to use the water only to flush their toilets.

Customers are being urged to flush out their systems before using the water again. Officials say the water could still have an odor, but that it is safe to use.

There are still questions about how the leak occurred, and whether the company where the spill took place took too long to tell state officials that there was a problem.
