MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Gov. Scott Walker says a national forest in far northern Wisconsin has long been underused for timber harvest, and the state’s economic agency is looking into ways to spur growth in the struggling timber industry.

A Gannett Wisconsin Media report says loggers and forestry experts have complained about how the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest has been managed.

Gannett says the U.S. Forest Service could have harvested 1.3 billion board feet of wood in the past decade under its forest plan. Instead it harvested about 60 percent of that.

Mark Maley of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. says the economic agency is considering its options. It’s hiring a consultant to help develop a stewardship plan.

Walker says he wants to ensure forestry remains a vibrant part of Wisconsin’s economy.
