State energy officials announce that October 30 is National Weatherization Day, which is a reminder that weatherization assistance is available to Wisconsin residents.  Wisconsin’s Weatherization Assistance Program provides assistance to eligible households and more than 6,130 households will be helped in fiscal year 2014.
Weatherization services are provided locally through a network of community action agencies, housing authorities, local governments and other non-profit organizations.  In addition to educating households about energy conservation, some common weatherization measures include:
  • Insulating attics, walls, and floors
  • Installing energy efficient lighting
  • Reducing air leakage
  • Repairing or replacing a furnace
  • Insulating or replacing a water heater
There are a number of steps that residents can do on their own to help reduce energy usage and costs:
  • Reduce your thermostat setting by 5 degrees or more when you are asleep or away.  Never reduce your temperature setting below 55 degrees to keep pipes from freezing.
  • Move furniture and drapes away from heating vents to allow heat to flow throughout the room.
  • Check your furnace filter monthly and replace as needed to maintain furnace efficiency.
  • Let the sun in during the day to reduce heating costs.
During fiscal year 2013, the Weatherization Assistance Program helped 7,472 households save an average of $437 on their annual energy bills.  More information about the weatherization program is available online.
