ELKHORN, Wis. – Walworth County authorities have called off their search for a person suspected of opening fire on a hunter with a handgun.
The sheriff’s office says it received a report of a shooting incident Saturday about 8:30 a.m. in the public hunting grounds of the Kettle Moraine Forest.
A caller said he and his father were legally hunting deer and wearing blaze orange. The father told his son another unknown male hunter wearing camouflage-type clothing fired at him once with a handgun. The father fired back once with his hunting rifle.
Neither the father nor son was hurt. Deputies don’t know whether the other male was hurt.
Authorities searched the area for seven hours using SWAT and K9 teams and a police helicopter. No additional search is planned.
