The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reports a two vehicle crash which occurred on Sept. 25, 2013 just after midnight on State Highway 27 about one tenth of a mile south of Cataract resulting in the death of one person.

The Monroe County 911 Communication Center received a call just after midnight from a passenger in one of the vehicles involved, identified as Carolyn Diekmann, 73, of rural Sparta reporting the crash. At the time of the call the location of the second vehicle was unknown and believed to have left the scene.

After arriving at the   scene emergency personnel located the second vehicle several hundred feet north of the accident scene over an embankment on the west side of State Hwy 27. A 22-year-old male from Sawyer County, WI was found deceased in the vehicle.

Preliminary investigation show that a passenger car driven by John Halbrehder, 68, of rural Sparta was southbound on State Hwy 27 when a northbound passenger car believed to have been driven by the deceased crossed the center line striking the southbound vehicle causing it to spin around and roll over in a ditch on the west side of the highway.

The striking vehicle continued north, entered a ditch on the west side of the highway, crossed a private driveway and went down an embankment before coming to rest on its wheels.

Both John Halbrehder and his passenger Carolyn Diekmann received non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Mayo Clinic Health Care in Sparta by the Sparta Ambulance Service.

It is believed the deceased whose name is being withheld pending notification of family was the only occupant of the striking vehicle.

Assisting Sheriff Deputies at the scene were the Sparta District Fire Department, Cataract First Responders, Sparta Ambulance Service, Monroe County 911 Communication Center and the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
