Vernon County Sheriff John B. Spears reports a two-vehicle collision, resulting in serious injuries, occurred Sunday morning, Sept. 22, 2013 at approximately 11:00 AM, in the Town of Christiana.

According to the Sheriff’s Department, Kody J. Green, 18, of La Crosse, WI was operating a vehicle eastbound on US Hwy 14 near Allen Lane, west of Westby. The Green vehicle crossed the center line and struck an oncoming, westbound vehicle driven by Marisela Reyes-Gonzales,  32, of Evansville, WI.

The Green vehicle traveled off the roadway, struck a mailbox and came to rest, upright, in a hay field along the north side of the highway. The Reyes-Gonzales vehicle was struck in a manner that it spun around, overturned and came to rest on its top along the westbound highway shoulder.

Green told investigators he was tired and may have fallen asleep. Green also reported swerving to miss striking a deer.

A passenger in the Reyes-Gonzales vehicle, Ana Maria Reyes-Gonzalez, 38, of Fitchburg, WI sustained serious injuries and she was flown to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse where she was listed in critical condition at the time of this release. Another passenger in the Reyes Gonzales vehicle, Antonio Carrillo Maya, 49, of Madison, WI sustained non-life threatening injuries and was also transported to Gundersen Health System, by Tri-State Ambulance. A thirteen year old girl from the same vehicle was also transported to the hospital and released after being checked for possible injuries. Two children were property restrained in child safety seats and escaped injury. The driver and one other adult in the Reyes-Gonzales vehicle were not injured.

Kody Green sustained possible injuries, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were Westby Police, Fire, and First Responders.

The crash remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
