The American Red Cross Western Wisconsin Region announced Laurie DeFlorian as its September 2013 Volunteer of the Month. Locally, throughout Wisconsin and even in areas across the nation, DeFlorian has made an impact as a disaster responder.
“My favorite part of being a volunteer with the Red Cross is being able to help people who are in need, no matter how big or small the need is,” said DeFlorian. “Being a volunteer with the Red Cross gives me the ability to help these people when they may have just experienced the worst event of their lives.”
With her children grown, DeFlorian decided she wanted to involve herself and continue her passion of helping others, so she became a Red Cross disaster responder in May of 2011. She continued to become more involved and since November of 2012 has gone out to help with five national disaster relief operations, totaling 72 days.
“Laurie has willingly deployed with two first-time volunteers from Wisconsin, sharing her experience and expertise with these volunteers less familiar with national deployment,” said Ben Hein, Red Cross employee. “The feedback from these volunteers reflected Laurie’s invaluable support and guidance.”
Laurie is an exceptionally active and dedicated volunteer and has impacted not only Red Cross employees and volunteers, but also communities across the nation.
Right now, Western Wisconsin Region is actively recruiting more disaster responders. With a statewide training conference coming up in October in Wausau, now is the time to go through the application process. This training conference will give volunteers the opportunity to receive trainings in just one weekend. Red Cross volunteers are united by their service and the feeling that in changing others’ lives, their lives are also changed.
