Cheese production up 3% in July

Cheese production in the U.S. in July totaled 910 million pounds up 3 percent from a year ago. Italian type cheese production increased 6.4 percent from a year ago to 393 million pounds while American type cheese production was 1 percent higher at 360 million pounds.

Wisconsin total cheese production in July was 233.5 million pounds up 4.1 percent from a year ago. The Badger State American type cheese production was 67.1 million pounds up 2.4 percent from a year ago with cheddar output up 3.1 percent. Italian cheese production was 5.8 percent higher at 115.9 million pounds.

California total cheese production in July was 188.545 million pounds up 1.6 percent from a year ago. American output in the Golden State was 4.8 percent higher at 50.4 million pounds, cheddar production increased 21.2 percent in July compared to a year ago. Italian output was 2.8 percent higher at 120.7 million pounds.

Butter production totaled 134 million pounds in July, up 1 percent from July of 2012.

Year-to-date cheese production is running 1.8 percent above 2012 while butter production is 1.4 percent ahead of the first seven months of last year.

Other dairy product production in July compared to a year ago:

  • Nonfat dry milk 116 million pounds (-17.5%)
  • Skim milk powders 53.1 million pounds (+42.7%)
  • Dry whey 76.2 million pounds (-4.5%)
  • Lactose 85.8 million pounds (+1.7%)
  • Whey protein concentrate 39.1 million pounds (+15.4%)
  • Regular ice cream 77 million gallons (+2.4%)
  • Lowfat ice cream 41.9 million gallons (-4.5%)
  • Sherbet 4.19 million gallons (+4.8%)
  • Frozen yogurt 6.52 million gallons (up slightly)

Year-to-date cheese production is running 1.8 percent above 2012 while butter production is 1.4 percent ahead of the first seven months of last year.
