Vernon County Sheriff John Spears would like to warn the public about a phone related scam that has been reported by numerous people in Vernon County. The first report was the end of July 2013, and is still occurring, with the last complaint being called in on August 23rd, 2013.

Elderly citizens seemed to be targeted, but could be occurring to anyone. A person calls and tells the person that they have either won in a contest, sweepstakes, Mega Millions, or have just won a car. They then ask them to send them a green dot card, money order or a check to them to pay for the insurance on the winnings. Usually it is and amount less than $5000.00.

The addresses they are telling them to send the money are to the following states and cities, Miami, Florida, Las Vegas Nevada, New Jersey or New York.

This has been investigated by local authorities and it turns out this is a scam. Sheriff Spears asks that if someone receives one of these calls that you do not give them any information or send any money, and to report this to your local law enforcement agency.
