The St. Louis Cardinals jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held on for a 8-6 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park. Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig both clubbed long home runs and Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook clubbed a 2-run double to provide the initial cushion.
But Westbrook struggled to protect that lead, serving up a 3-run homer to Aramis Ramirez and eventually departing before the 5th inning.
Brewers starter Tom Gorzelanny gave up 7-runs on 10-hits in just 3 2/3 innings in his second straight poor start. He’s now given up 16 hits and 12 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings in his last two outings, including 4 home runs.
The loss leaves the Brewers with a 13-29 record in day games this season.
Offensively, the Brewers collected 14 hits, three of them from Khris Davis, but finished 3 of 14 with runners in scoring position and a season high 14 men left on base.
The Brewers are off today. They’ll hit the road to face the Reds in Cincinnati on Friday night.
