Ahead of Clinton was a dump truck and ahead of the dump truck was a horse-drawn wagon (buggy). Clinton attempted to pass the dump truck and horse-drawn wagon on the left.

Lacy A. Olson,20, of Soldiers Grove, WI was driving south on County Road J and as she crested a hill, Olson said she saw the Clinton vehicle in her lane as well as the other two vehicles occupying the northbound lane. Olson braked, turned right and was able to avoid both vehicles, but she lost control. The Olson vehicle struck an embankment and utility pole along the right side of the roadway and overturned. Olson was wearing a seat belt and escaped serious injury and she was taken to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua by private vehicle.
