FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) – More than 11,000 students in the St. Louis suburb where a white police officer killed an unarmed black 18-year-old returned to school Monday after more than a week of missed classes.

Classes in the Ferguson-Florissant School District were scheduled to begin Aug. 14, five days after Michael Brown’s shooting death. But street protests marred by sometimes-violent clashes between police and demonstrators led to several delays.

Students, teachers and parents say they are eager to return to their routines. Many described school as a place of refuge from the images of police in riot gear, tear gas and armored vehicles.

Brown was a recent graduate of Normandy High School, where classes resumed as scheduled last week.
