State Hwy 27 was closed north of Sparta for much of the morning after a semi tipped over and blocked both lanes of traffic.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says it was notified at 3:52 a.m. this morning of a semi rolled over on STH 27 at Farmland Ave. in the Township of Sparta.
Benjamin Allen of Bangor was operating a 2014 Peterbuilt Semi Tractor-trailer unit southbound on Hwy 27 approaching Farmland Ave. when he took evasive action to avoid striking multiple deer in the roadway. The evasive action caused the trailer of the unit to enter the northbound ditch. Allen was able to bring the trailer back onto the highway, however he was unable to keep the semi unit upright and it rolled over onto its side blocking the northbound lane of Hwy 27.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Monroe County 911 Communications Center, the Sparta Area Fire Protection District and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office
