A pilot was injured when a helicopter doing some crop dusting crashed in a field in Monroe County Thursday morning.
Sheriff Peter Quirin says the pilot was crop dusting around 10:30 a.m. near Tunnel City when he experienced some trouble with his chopper and went down in a cornfield in a rural area near east of Fort McCoy.
Monroe County Chief Deputy Robert Conroy said the pilot called in with his cell phone to emergency dispatch following the crash. A helicopter from nearby Fort McCoy assisted with the search in locating the pilot, who remained on the phone during the search.
Quirin said the pilot, who complained of back and ankle pain, was taken to Tomah Memorial Hospital. The pilot, who hasn’t been identified, was later flown to a La Crosse hospital for treatment of his injuries. The severity of the pilot’s injuries isn’t known.
Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
