MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Prosecutors leading a secret investigation into Gov. Scott Walker’s 2012 recall campaign and a host of conservative groups are arguing they’re immune from lawsuit seeking to halt the probe.
Prosecutors are looking into whether Walker’s campaign illegally coordinated with conservative groups through a so-called John Doe probe, where information is tightly controlled. Wisconsin Club for Growth has filed a federal lawsuit seeking to stop the probe. U.S. District Judge Rudolph Randa in Milwaukee has stayed the investigation.
The prosecutors have appealed the stay to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. They filed briefs on Friday arguing that Randa mistakenly ruled they weren’t immune from the lawsuit and should have abstained from ruling in the lawsuit.
