WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House is meeting growing resistance from both the left and the right as it pushes a multibillion-dollar emergency spending bill for the border.

That raises questions about chances for any action in Congress to address the crisis of tens of thousands of unaccompanied children crossing into Texas.

Top Obama administration officials held a closed-door briefing for senators late Wednesday, but it appeared to change few minds. Republicans criticized the price tag of the $3.7 billion spending bill, while some Democrats said it wasn’t big enough.

In the meeting, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson indicated support for changing immigration law to allow kids to be returned more quickly to Central America. But while many Democrats support such a change, Johnson’s statement didn’t go far enough to satisfy Republicans.
