SPARTA, Wis– A Sparta man is in custody after threatening to kill people and any responding officers.

Sparta police say Friday officers responded to a report of an intoxicated man threatening to load his guns on the 1900 block of River Road.

Police say an officer saw Phillip Smith, 33, pointing a rifle out the window. The Monroe County Combined Tactical Team was called in.

Police say when Smith refused to communicate with officers they were forced to deployed flash bangs and chemical munitions into the home. Smith came outside and was ultimately shot with bean bag rounds and taken into custody.

He was taken to the hospital and medically cleared.
